Itinerary of the Strada Paolina

Led by the Heritage Department, the Strada Paolina project is piloted by the Paoli Museum and involves several departments. This heritage trail brings together the emblematic places of the 18th century and offers a historical reading of Castagniccia. It enhances the territory and develops its economy, by emphasising local crafts and producers of the region.
Testifying to the richness of its past, Castagniccia has numerous heritage elements listed as Historic Monuments, almost all of which have been inventoried. In addition, the Collectivité de Corse and the municipalities that own them have been investing in the restoration of important buildings for several years. Finally, many producers and craftsmen, still carrying out their activities according to ancestral gestures, are installed in the region. A real tourism strategy needs to be put in place, with the museum at its heart, to enhance the region's assets and overcome its weaknesses. Thirteen sites line the route of the Strada Paolina: the bridge of Ponte Novu, the bridge of Ponte-Leccia, the convent of Casabianca, the convent of Orezza (Piedicroce), the convent of St. Francis (Morosaglia), the church of Santa Maria Riscamone (Castellu di Rustinu), the church of Santa Reparata (Morosaglia) the church of Notre Dame du Mont Carmel (Stoppia Nova), the church of Saint-Pierre Saint-Paul (Piedicroce), the parish church of St Pierre St Paul (Campile), the church of St Jean-Baptiste (La Porta), the Chapel of San Tumasgiu, (Castellu di Rustinu), and the Pasquale Paoli Museum (Morosaglia) These remarkable buildings will be presented via dematerialised panels that can be downloaded by QR codes displayed on cartels and a smartphone application will be created. As part of the promotion of the intangible heritage of Castagniccia, video recordings of craftsmen, representative of the diversity of activities, have been produced. Mediation actions are also carried out with schoolchildren, in partnership with the craftsmen. In order to develop the tourist potential of Merusaglia, two broadcasting terminals were acquired and installed, one at the museum, the other at the Ponte-Leccia Tourist Office, as a product of appeal in order to make users of this service want to leave the main road and take the Strada Paolina route. In the long term, the Collectivité de Corse hopes to obtain the label Pays d'art et d'histoire or create a Corsican Heritage label.
