Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, U Quercitellu (Quercitello)

The church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, serving the hamlet of Stoppia Nova, was built from 1760 onwards, on the site of an old chapel. The interior of the building is remarkably richly decorated.
The church, built on a hillside, has a simple appearance, with only the western façade revealing the artistic research characteristic of the Baroque period. The interior of the building is remarkably rich in ornament. Its plan consists of a short nave, bordered by four side chapels and ending with a raised choir topped by a lantern cupola. On its southern flank, one can see the waiting stones that were probably used to build a bell tower. The main facade, with its pilasters, has two levels topped by a triangular pediment. The church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, serving the hamlet of Stoppia Nova, was built from 1760 onwards, on the site of an ancient chapel mentioned in the minutes of the pastoral visit carried out in 1646 by the Bishop of Mariana and Accia, Mgr Marliani. Its remarkable stucco decoration, made between 1775 and 1781, is attributable to the Cagliata workshop, Ligurian stucco artists who were very active in Corsica in the years 1770-1790. Their very particular style, called Barocchetto, is characterised by asymmetrical and vegetal forms inspired by the Louis XV style. The entire decoration was restored in 2012. There is a painting of St. Roch signed by Joseph Giordani de La Porta and dated 1892. The remarkable preaching pulpit, in masonry and stucco, is dated 25 June 1781. It consists of a suspended basin and a staircase with a full curved banister. It is decorated in relief with a plant ornament and the monogram of the Virgin. The building is classified as a Historic Monument.
