Museum of the birthplace of Pasquale Paoli

The Museum Maison Natale de Pasquale Paoli, in Merusaglia, is housed in the birthplace of Pasquale Paoli (1725-1807). A Corsican patriot who liberated Corsica from the Genoese occupation and offered independence to his island where he established a democratic state, he is at the same time a General-in-Chief, a man of the Enlightenment, a precursor in constitutional matters and an inspiration for the future American revolutionaries.
On 5 February 1807, Pasquale Paoli, exiled in London, died at the age of 82. He was buried in the Saint Pancras cemetery. More than 80 years later, a long and important political and popular mobilization allowed the return of his ashes to his native land. In 1889, Jean-Baptiste Franceschini-Pietri, grand-nephew of Pasquale Paoli through his sister Chiara Maria, then owner of the Paoli house, agreed to give the house to the Department of Corsica under the conditions that "the oratory would be used as a tomb; the rest of the house, partly to house the eldest of the Tomasi brothers who would be the caretaker, and partly for the establishment of a small Corsican museum. Work was then undertaken to renovate the building and transform it into a museum, and the General's ashes were brought back from London where they now rest in the chapel created for the occasion. However, the museum was not installed until 1954. The building, registered on the supplementary list of Historic Monuments in 1975, has been labelled a Musée de France and also a Maison des Illustres since 2012. Its museography deals with the development of the myth of Pasquale Paoli before and after his death, through his image, highlighting the rich collection of paintings and engravings, and endeavours to explain the construction of a State through the Constitution, the creation of a currency, a fleet and a university. Because of the museum's place at the heart of the Strada Paolina, a development project for the region, an exhibition room is dedicated to the crafts of Castagniccia and features a representation of A Sala, a typically Corsican piece. Each year, a new temporary exhibition enriches the permanent exhibition and highlights the acquisitions. It is accompanied by a richly illustrated catalogue with articles by well-known scientists on the subject in question. The museum also offers an educational and interactive space dedicated to young visitors. Other modern means of mediation are intended for adults. This history museum and its cultural programme thus offer a diversity of points of view that accompany the visitor so that he can understand the place Paoli occupies in the history of ideas.
