Masone

Just across the Turchino Pass, on the Po Valley side of a historic pass road that has always linked the Ligurian Sea to the Po Valley, lies the village of Masone. Like the entire valley of which it is part, the Stura valley, Masone too has ancient origins that are lost in the mists of time. For centuries its inhabitants have been able to make the most of a harsh and difficult land, consolidating ancient knowledge and practices. The place that remembers all this is the "Andrea Tubino" Museum, founded at the end of the 1970s and located on the highest point of the village. The "Tubino" Museum is a rich and well-organised container of many exhibits, witnesses of centuries of rural civilisation. However, this museum has a peculiar feature, which distinguishes it from other 'colleagues' in the same category. In fact, the Tubino Museum is particularly dedicated to iron, especially its working and transformation. This happens and arises for very simple reasons: in ancient times the building's grounds housed a fully functioning foundry, which today certainly constitutes the most captivating and interesting part of the visit. The effect of a return to the past, in an environment that has remained substantially intact, is remarkable in this section of the museum, suitably enriched by a multimedia apparatus. The section where the donkey-headed mallet driven by a water wheel is strikingly large, testifying to the efficiency of this foundry, as is the presence of the furnaces. The other sections of the museum are no less impressive. Of particular interest is the private chapel on the top floor, which reminds us that this building was once an Augustinian convent, and that from this chapel the older and ailing friars could hear mass from the grille that still overlooks the church, without having to go downstairs from their cells.
