Ville-di-Pietrabugno

NIVERE" TRAIL The start of the "nivere" trail is at the place called Manganu (catapult). A watchtower, built in 1556, once stood here. The route linked the two sides of Cap-Corse and the Piève di Lota, and was a strategic communication route. This pedestrian and mule link has always favoured commercial exchanges and long-lasting human relations between the communities of Pietrabugno, Farinole, Patrimonio, Olmeta du Cap, and the Piève di Lota. Until the middle of the 20th century, the path led the peasants of Ville to the chestnut groves and the terraced crops (olive trees, orchards, wheat, vines, vegetables) which made the main economic wealth of the commune. The path finally leads to the Col de Bocca Pruna and the Nivere. This remarkable building was used to compress snow in huge tanks (i vasi) in order to obtain ice. Built during the Genoese period, the Nivera vechja supplied Bastia, its hospital and its shops until the end of the 19th century and the invention of the industrial refrigerator. Before arriving at the pass, the heritage loop branches off to the right towards the hamlet of Alzetu, located on the northern slope of the commune. The gently sloping path then offers a breathtaking view of Bastia and the Tyrrhenian Sea, the Chjurlinu pond and the eastern plain. It then reaches the Funtana vechja washhouse in Guaitella, which is the final point of this walk.
