Cervo

Cervo, one of the most beautiful villages in western Liguria. Perched in a position overlooking the coast, it dominates with its beauty and towers over us with its charm. In the upper part of the village is the Castle of the Clavesana family, evidence of a feudal past when the town belonged to one of the most important families in medieval Liguria. Inside, is the Ethnographic Museum "Franco Ferrero" of Western Liguria, the central pivot of a tour itinerary that we present here. The Ferrero Museum's collection is one of the most complete and important in the region. On the upper floor is the exhibition "Women of Liguria 1850 - 1950", which recounts a century of evolution in the condition of women, as told through more than 250 dolls, skilfully collected in pictures of daily life that are truly remarkable for their workmanship, imagination and creativity. The first room of the museum deals with military life, with many relics from the First and Second World Wars. In the second room, the focus is on school, with a faithful reconstruction made from period materials: the desk, books, notebooks, pen, inkwell and many other things take us back to the classroom with our grandparents. Of great importance is the adjoining room, dedicated to the main activity of generations of Cervo inhabitants: seafaring. From here onwards, the plunge into the past is deeper and deeper: the room of trades, with exhibits related to the cultivation of the olive tree and all related activities, as well as in general the presence of testimonies to all aspects of daily life. In fact, perfectly reconstructed is a domestic environment, full of all those objects so obscure to us, but so familiar to past generations. A visit to the Ferrero museum is a good viaticum to continue with the other points of interest that we would like to bring to your attention. One above all, the splendid Church of St. John the Baptist, also known as the "church of the coral workers" because it was built thanks to the economic effort of this important workforce of the village. To tell the truth, a non-exclusive effort, a sign of the great prestige and wealth of Ligurian craftsmanship over the centuries. Then there is Viale Palace, which reminds us of a respectable noble past, and then there is the Bastion, which bears witness to a difficult period when it was necessary to defend oneself from the enemy coming by sea. Further on, in the surrounding countryside, there are many testimonies of rural life and ancient knowledge, which make a visit to Cervo and its surroundings a true open-air encyclopaedia of our ancient past.
