The tower of Albu

The construction of the Albu tower was requested as early as 1562 by the inhabitants of Ogliastru to protect the navy and the village from barbarian incursions. The tower was finally built around 1588, the day after a terrible attack...
The tower of Albu, or torra del Greco, was built around 1588, in the aftermath of a terrible attack by barbarian pirates working for the governor of Algiers, Hassan Pasha. This tower, which protects the population of Ugliastru, is also part of the defence system of the town of San Fiurenzu and its gulf, whose network of towers stretches from the Agriates to the Cap Corse. The Torra del Greco, situated to the north-east of the Gulf of San Fiurenzu, is said to have taken its name from a wind, the Greco (or Grecale), which was used in the past to indicate this direction. The tower was seriously damaged in 1623, following a new barbarian attack. The village was even looted, burned and dozens of inhabitants were captured and enslaved. The following year, in 1624, the tower underwent major restoration work, using large quantities of lime and bricks. The inhabitants of the village, both men and women, took part in this work, particularly for the transport of materials. In order to safeguard this tower, which is in a serious state of disrepair and threatens to fall into ruin, the Collectivité de Corse, the owner of the building, has undertaken major restoration and enhancement work, which will be completed in 2022.
