The Miomu tower

The Miomu tower was built in 1561 to protect the inhabitants of the Lota bay from barbarian incursions. It is one of the most complete and best preserved coastal towers in Corsica.
Built in 1561, the tower was in a poor state of repair by 1616 and major work was carried out on the roof terrace, including the construction of the gatehouse, "a guardiola". It was usually guarded by two or three torregiani, whose salaries were financed by the community. In the 17th and 18th centuries, Genoese officers made numerous visits to the tower to check the state of the weapons and ammunition and the diligence of the guards, who were often absent... In the middle of the 19th century the tower became obsolete and its management was entrusted to the Ponts et Chaussées department by the Secretary of State for War. In 2003, ownership of the tower was transferred from the State to the Collectivité de Corse. The restoration of the tower and its development as a heritage site will be carried out between 2017 and 2021. At the time of its construction, in 1561, the environment of this tower was quite different: the Miomu navy only had a few houses or warehouses (magazini), in which goods (notably wine) intended for export were stored. The land near the navy, relatively well watered and easily accessible, was cultivated with olive trees, orchards and vineyards. The main road, which linked Bastia (the Genoese capital) to Cap Corse (one of the most commercial regions of the island), passed by the beach at the foot of the tower. Thus, because of its strategic position, the Miomu tower could have had several functions: - to watch over the sea, - to protect the navy and its warehouses, - to protect the cultivated land near the coast, - to control the maritime and land traffic between Bastia and the Cap Corse.
