Toga, Marina d'È Ville di Pietrabugnu

On the outskirts of the village of Alzetu and its terraced crops, before arriving at Mandriolu and its olive grove, you will discover Bastia and the panorama of the Bertrand valley, which plunges towards Toga. The history of this coastal district is linked to the industrialisation of Corsica. Until 1885, it was home to the largest iron ore processing plant in the western Mediterranean. The first blast furnace was built there in 1841 by the Compagnie métallurgique de la Corse. Throughout the 19th century, the Toga factory developed its activity, employing up to 400 people, and working with iron ore imported from the island of Elba, Bône (Algeria), St Léon (Sardinia) and Garrocha (Spain). Its activity put the port of Bastia in contact with the entire Mediterranean basin. TOGA, birthplace of the "Cape wine Louis Napoleon Mattei made this area of TOGA the centre of production for the export of the world-renowned "Cap Corse Mattei" quinquina. The development of the company accelerated in 1890, essentially from the "New Port" of Bastia from which the boats leaving for Marseille set sail. The Mattei production plant then became the flagship of industrial Corsica.
