Funtanaccia

This place was a restful stop for all those who took the path to Bocca Pruna and even further towards the Corsican Cape or the west coast. One could refresh oneself at the spring surrounded by hundred-year-old oaks. Linking people and villages At the place called "Funtanaccia", men and women, mostly from Ferringulé (Farinole), who were coming and going to Bastia via Ville, stopped to refresh themselves at the fountain surrounded by hundred-year-old oaks. The view from here is superb. You can see the village and the church of Sainte Lucie facing the sea. Long before the opening of the motor roads in the 19th century, this mule track was the only communication route between the Bastiese region and the western coast of the Cap Corse. This function created very strong links between the Villais and the inhabitants of Farinole. The path allowed access to the "Nivere" of the Bocca Pruna pass and to the surrounding crops. An ancestral knowledge of stone The vital importance of this itinerary can be seen in the extensive construction work that has been carried out on it over the years. The dry stone walls and low walls often mark out the path through the mountain. Emmarchements and ricciate (stonework) soften the steepest passages, while blackcurrant bushes help to manage run-off water. These developments required a unique know-how in the art of using dry stone. The workers who have worked today to restore this heritage trail are the custodians of these techniques, inherited from the most ancient times.
