I Stivali

From i Stivali, as far as Vignarsa, one can observe the most beautiful remains of terraced cultivation, testimonies of the Villais' know-how in dry stone construction. At the end of the 18th century, the dominant crops in the small community of Pietrabugno were olive trees, vines and lemon trees. There were also a few acres of chestnut trees, and annual crops such as wheat, barley, and some flax. The surplus oil and wine was sold in Bastia. Lemons, on the other hand, were exported by sea to the port of Livorno to be exchanged for essential goods. Heavenly gardens These places, protected from the wind, were endowed with a large water resource. From "I Stivali" to "Vignarsa", you can discover the beautiful remains of terraced cultivation, evidence of the Villais know-how in dry stone walls. The land was rich, planted with fruit trees and vegetables. These places lived to the rhythm of a daily work punctuated by laughter and endless discussions... Children played among themselves, while waiting for their parents to finish their day's work. As soon as they were filled, the baskets and large baskets were taken to the cellars of the village houses where the products were prepared for sale the next morning at the market in Bastia at the "Bancu di Villesi" (the Villais' stall). From one side to the other The heritage trail runs through the valley between Guaitella and Alzetu where "u fiume di e Calanche" is located. The watercourse separates the two slopes. It successively follows the two sides of the valley. In the direction of the mountain, the northern slope (à l'umbria), less exposed to the sun, was formerly reserved for vegetable gardens, particularly near the village. Clustered along the stream, the small garden plots benefited from a more humid climate. The south-facing slope (in Sulana) was drier and more favourable to crops such as wheat, vines and olives, which were less demanding in terms of water. As the fauna and flora adapted to these conditions, man also adapted to the relief of the valley. He has taken advantage of the constraints of each slope. In addition to agriculture, another economic activity, less well known, occupied the Villais. This was the breeding of dairy cows. A cooperative was established in Bastia, in the Rue Abbatucci. It operated until the 1960s.
