Church of St Catherine

The most important religious monument in Upper Rossiglione is certainly the Church of St Catherine. This fifteenth-century church contains such a wealth of architectural and artistic treasures that it amazes visitors, who cannot imagine that a church almost hidden away in such a small village could be so richly endowed. Countless valuable works are preserved. From the painting of the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian in the chapel of "Santa Lucia dei Chiodaroli", to the 17th century painting of the Visitation. It is also worth mentioning the "Ecce Homo", a sculpture of the Neapolitan school from the 17th century. There is a remarkable statue of Our Lady of the Angels, attributed to the school of Maragliano, begun by the Genoese sculptor and completed by his nephew, which was to have been requisitioned by Napoleon's troops but was saved at the last moment by the stubbornness of the people of “rossiglionesi”. The sculpture of Our Lady of the Rosary is the work of Filippo Parodi, a pupil of Bernini. Due to a small defect, the client refused the work, so the people of Rossiglione decided to take over the purchase. In short, this church is a real treasure trove of what the rich community of Rossiglione, very attentive to the artistic development of its places of worship, was able to do with its own resources, especially in the centuries of greatest wealth, between the 16th and 18th centuries. Above all, the Pizzorno, Minetti and Vassallo families were generous with their benevolence and patronage.
