Christopher Columbus’ House

The house where the famous navigator was born is located in the old 'Contrada del Caroggio', today's Via Rati, at number 26. The building originally consisted of a ground floor and two upper floors, like most of the other buildings in the village centre. The structure still has the characteristics of an old building. To the left of the house there used to be an alley, renamed Cristoforo Colombo, visible in the illustrations of the time, now closed and incorporated into the other buildings. The house was inhabited for several generations by the Colombo family, who, according to archival documents of the time, were descendants of the navigator. From the first half of the 15th century, they were particularly involved in navigation. The Reverend Antonio Colombo, a descendant of that family, had the house restored and painted in 1650. He composed a poetic epigraph for the occasion, which was painted on the façade, together with an effigy of Christopher Columbus, taken from an old painting that is still kept in the town hall. The building was later raised by one floor and restored several times. In the past, many American captains with their ships came to Cogoleto specifically to visit the birthplace of the Great Navigator and to admire the portrait of the Admiral of the Ocean Sea.
