House of the Mine

Located at an altitude of just over 1,000 metres, a few steps from the Alta Via dei Monti Liguri trail, near the Pratorotondo refuge, it was built in the years before the Second World War. It was built to provide shelter for workers digging an iron mine that was opening up in the surrounding area. The dark stones indicate the presence of ferrous metal. Work in the mine was subsequently stopped. The shelter was used by families of farmers who, in the summer, came up from the hamlet of Sciarborasca to feed their livestock, for the traditional haymaking, characterised by the cutting and transporting downstream of the hay found along the large mountain meadows in the area. Over time, this use also ceased and the facility was abandoned for good. Without any further maintenance, the mine house deteriorated, becoming little more than a pile of stones. Thanks to a major renovation at the beginning of the new millennium, it now presents itself to us as a real refuge, with a part available to all hikers, an outside area for picnics and a remaining part reserved for the Alpini, who hold their annual meeting here every July.
