Oratory of St. Lawrence

St. Lawrence is the patron saint of Cogoleto. Adjacent to the Church of St. Mary Major, near the site of the ancient defensive castle, is the Oratory of St. Lawrence, probably built around the 15th century and home to the Confraternity of the same name. The building, rich in history, has in the past hosted important episodes in the public life of Cogoleto. The local representative body used to meet here to discuss and take important decisions in the interest of the population. It houses and exhibits works of great artistic value, such as the Ligurian school nativity scene and the 17th century processional crucifix, as well as some valuable works by Gino Grimaldi, the well-known painter of the former psychiatric hospital in Pratozanino. Two works depicting the patron saint are also worth mentioning: the Genoese Baroque painting of the Martyrdom of St Lawrence by Giovanni Battista Carlone, an important master and painter of the 17th century, and the bas-relief of St Lawrence by Antonio Brilla in the 19th centuryIn recent years, the historical, artistic and religious heritage of the Oratory has been further enriched with the addition of a terracotta nativity scene by ceramist Luca Damonte, depicting places and characters from Cogoleto.
