Defensive Towers

Walking along the streets of Cogoleto's historic centre, you can see some towers dating back to ancient times, to the time when there was a need to protect oneself from the dangerous incursions of Barbary pirates. For these reasons, the ancient village was equipped with a defensive system consisting of a castle and several towers. A detailed representation of the coast of Cogoleto, seen from the sea, dating from the second half of the 17th century and preserved in France, shows the presence of this defence system. The construction of such a sighting and protection system was intended to safeguard the coastline from land incursions, which often resulted in looting and kidnapping. An external evaluation shows that these towers have construction characteristics common to other towers of the Republic of Genoa. The urban development of the town has camouflaged the five towers, but they continue to be visible to the most attentive observer. From east to west we find the Ansaldo tower, the Genovese tower, the Medieval tower, the Saracen tower and the Parasco tower. Most of them were built to defend the interests of individual families and their entourage. The Genovese tower, located near the station, was apparently built to defend the inhabitants who gravitated around the area in front of it and the interests of the entire community.
