The Charterhouse of Toirano

The history of the Charterhouse of Toirano, with respect to its foundation, begins much earlier in time In fact, the Carthusian settlement of St Peter "in Vincoli", still visible today in Toirano, began before the foundation of this monastery, when the monks of San Colombano di Bobbio built the monastic seat of St Peter in Varatella. The dependency of Bobbio, one of the many in the Ligurian arch, typical of the swarm of constructions aimed at guaranteeing the important monastery road control between the Ligurian Sea and the immediate Po Valley hinterland, was established around the 8th century and immediately assumed great prestige. In particular, it was with the help of the bishops of Albenga that it grew in wealth and importance. Then, in 1313, it was the Carthusians who took over from the monks of Bobbio, and it was only in 1495 that they moved to the present site. Here the monastery had a long period of rebirth and prosperity, which came to an abrupt end with the dissolution of the religious orders by the Napoleonic Democratic Republic in 1798. Between dissolution and confiscations, the monks of St Bruno were never able to return to their monastic house. Today it is clearly in a serious state of disrepair, due to human neglect and the ravages of the centuries. It is hoped that a recovery project for this important monument of medieval Liguria can soon be activated.
