Palazzo d’Aste del Carretto

Palazzo d'Aste occupies the western area of the historic centre of Toirano. This complex building, with an important English garden, refers to the most important family in the history of the village. Just think that the D’Aste were already invested with the fief of Toirano by the Bishop of Albenga in the thirteenth century. When, in 1386, the village passed under the control of Genoa, the D'Aste family kept important possessions in the area and, obviously, this residence. Many will be the renovations over the centuries, some of which were destined to disrupt the urban layout of the surrounding area. In particular, it was between the 17th and 18th centuries that the wing named after the "del Carretto" was added. Today the residence houses the Val Varatella Ethnographic Museum and on the Piano Nobile (main floor) there is a very interesting tour of perfectly preserved 17th, 18th and 19th century furnishings. The rooms on the Piano Nobile, which are accessed by an elegant staircase, include first of all the elegant "boudoir", the symbol of the most intimate and reserved area of the residence, dedicated to moments of relaxation, with 19th century furniture. The noble chapel, built by the Marquises for private ceremonies, is sober yet refined. Enriched by the inlaid marble of the 17th-century altar, it displays a painting of the "Virgin Mary and Child Jesus" of the 17th-century Ligurian school. The picture gallery is obviously rich in paintings, all with a sacred theme and made during the period of time that characterises the entire residence, between the 17th and 18th centuries. Dominated by red damask, the dining room of the same name is adorned with a remarkable crystal chandelier. The visitor's curiosity is piqued by the 'parade bedroom' with its imposing four-poster bed. The visit is completed by the Hall of Coats of Arms, also known as the Fireplace Hall, which is currently fitted with a fireplace screen in green textured silk, a colour that also characterises the entire room. This room was mainly devoted to playing cards and chess, in short, it fulfilled its role as an entertainment room. However, it is the two family crests of the D'Aste and Del Carretto families that give it its name.
