Continuing north of the village of Romaggi, along Provincial Road 42, at a certain point a narrower and steeper branch-off opens up, leading to the slopes of Mount Ramaceto, with a few disconnected and unpaved stretches. Not long after taking this diversions, on the right, you will notice, slightly lower down, a classic old Ligurian farmhouse, a "casun", still standing but in a condition that makes rapid intervention very necessary. This, however, is not a "casun" like all the others, but is known as the "Casun du Stecca", in Genoese; a very important name in the recent history of Liguria. In fact, it was in the "Casun du Stecca" that Aldo Gastaldi, the great partisan commander "Bisagno", gathered a group of the men and began his Resistance. This was the birth of the first nucleus of the future Cichero Division, a partisan formation that became more and more extensive and articulated, which at the peak of its expansion included several brigades and an operational area, shared with the other formations of the so-called VI zone, which extended over most of central-eastern Liguria, from the Aveto valley to the Trebbia valley area, reaching the border of the four regions. It all began here, with a group of courageous and stubborn young men, determined not to leave Italy in the ignominy of fascism and in the hands of the Nazi occupation, commanded by a man who always placed, even in the harshest hours of those terrible 20 months, humanity above barbarity, civilisation above revenge. This is why Aldo Gastaldi has taken a special place in the Resistance memorial, and not only because of his tragic death a few days after the Liberation. Today the "Casun du Stecca" is still there, reminding us that if an entire generation was made to face its responsibilities by history, many chose to be on the side of freedom and democracy.
