Church of Certenoli

Our Lady of the Assumption of Certenoli rises just above the course of the Lavagna stream, which characterises the territory of the municipality of San Colombano Certenoli. The first news of this important religious building dates back to the first decades of the 13th century, when the Malaspina family ruled over this area. It then underwent a series of transformations that brought it to its current appearance, with the most important interventions dating back to the 18th century. Certainly, since the beginning, this church has played a fundamental role in the ecclesiastical organisation of this area, being historically the parish seat of Certenoli. It is no coincidence that when the Bishop of Genoa came on a pastoral visit, he was housed behind this building. Curiously, renovations in the 18th century gave it a Greek cross shape. Probably at the time the plans for the size of this church were very ambitious, it is believed that it was even conceived as a large sanctuary able to accommodate many pilgrims. The Church of Our Lady of the Assumption in Certenoli has never reached these heights of importance, but it remains a splendid building of worship located in a place with a beautiful panorama.
