Abbey of Villa Oneto

A mysterious little church has been marking the archaeological debate for years. We are not far from the Lavagna stream in the territory of San Colombano Certenoli, near the provincial road that, reaching Leivi, allows us to cross towards Chiavari. We are in the locality of Villa Oneto. Lying close to a dirt road, we find a church, the church of the Nativity of Villa Oneto, whose shape, reminiscent of the so-called "Greek cross", that is, with equal arms, in fact brings to mind the Orthodox churches. Here the mystery arises: what is an Orthodox church doing in the heart of the Ligurian Apennines? In itself, nothing strange. Liguria was a Byzantine, and therefore Greek Orthodox, area for many centuries, from the Justinian reconquest of Italy until its annexation by the Lombards. Certainly this is not enough to make our little church a building of its time. The mystery remains thick. Some claim that the rebuilding of the walls can be dated to before the year 1000, others that the construction dates back to the 16th-17th centuries. We hope that future excavation campaigns can solve the enigma of the Church of the Nativity of Villa Oneto.
