Fontaines - Aghja

A LANDSCAPE SHAPED BY THE HAND OF MAN A prosperous agricultural region, the small peninsula of Cap-Corse has taken advantage of land with sometimes steep slopes by developing it for agriculture. Cultivating the nourishing earth The area around u Liccetu and u Fenu was the subject of significant agricultural development. The vegetable gardens produced vegetables and fruit in abundance. Along the path, cultivation terraces, threshing floors, irrigation channels and basins reveal the back-breaking work undertaken by several successive generations in order to extract a few subsidies from a land that was nevertheless difficult to cultivate. Entering what was once the intimate world of the ortu (the vegetable garden), strictly supervised and protected, the path winds along the beautiful terraces of crops. The gardens clustered around a watering channel which, from the seven basins of Razedda, supplied the hamlets of u Liccetu and u Fenu with water. "L'antico regolamento fatto dai nostri autori The supply of water to the gardens was regulated by the owners. An oral regulation specific to the two hamlets was perpetuated by tradition. It was known and applied by all. The use of water was shared two thirds for u Fenu and one third for u Liccetu. Each year, after the gully had been cleaned, lots were drawn to distribute the water rights. An amazing plant heritage The cultivated plant heritage of Cap-Corse was very rich in the past. Vegetables and different varieties of traditional fruit trees have been inventoried in Luri. Among these species, the Cap-Corse caper is a shrub that grows wild on the well exposed walls and rocks of the region. Its fruits, preserved in vinegar, give capers
