Saint Nicolas Convent - Seneca Tower

BETWEEN TWO SEAS On the ridge, near the pass of Sainte Lucie, the rocky peak on which the tower of Seneca rises, offers a privileged observation point on both sides of the Cap Corse. The former Capuchin convent of Saint Nicolas was built on the flat area below in 1548. The Seneca Tower This is a fortified building from the 16th century. According to oral tradition, Seneca was forced into exile here. In 41 AD, following the assassination of Caligula, the philosopher was banished to Corsica by Emperor Claudius. He is said to have spent part of his eight years of exile there, in a Roman fortification. This ordeal inspired him to make harsh remarks about the island and its inhabitants. Moreover, he experienced an unfortunate episode during his stay in Corsica: judged to be too enterprising with a young girl from Luri, the philosopher was beaten up and given a good spanking with nettle, since renamed urticula di Seneca (Seneca's nettle). U castellu delli Moti On the site of the Seneca tower, the remains of a medieval fortification, the Moti castle, remain. In the 12th century, this castellu was one of a series of fortified buildings belonging to the feudal lords of the northern Cap-Corse, the Da Mare. It is said that an underground passage allowed access to the tower, and that the resistance stored weapons there during the Second World War. However, its entrance has never been located. The convent of Saint Nicolas The former Capuchin convent dates from the 16th century. It has had many uses. During the First World War it was used as an internment camp for German civilians. In 1916 the camp had 130 prisoners. It was then transformed into a children's home, before being closed in the 1980s due to ill-treatment and hygiene problems. The walls of the lower part of the convent still have an interesting architectural feature. They are topped by anti-intrusion crowns.
