Terraced cultivation

All around the village, the slopes have been terraced. This type of development is found throughout the Mediterranean and is a traditional method of cultivation adapted to the particularities of the relief. Different types of terraces can be distinguished according to their typology and their function. In Peri, they organise all the gardens in a cascade on the outskirts of the village, and are supported by low dry stone walls which delimit the plots and protect them from erosion. In order to make them ploughable and fertile, the ancients cleared the slopes and extracted the stones from the soil. Over time, thanks to the addition of manure, the soils were enriched and allowed for different types of crops: cereals, vines, chestnuts, fruit trees or vegetable gardens. Today, these constitute a heritage representative of traditional rural culture. The origin of the village's name has been lost to memory. Is it "the stone" or "the pear"?
