Scaraviglie

A STOPOVER ON THE TRANSHUMANCE PATH The small hamlet of e Scaravaglie is located at the entrance to the Restonica valley. Originally made up of dry-stone houses, associated with agricultural buildings and vegetable gardens, it was home to a large population of farmers and stockbreeders at the gateway to the town. Some of the buildings have preserved their ancient appearance linked to the once prosperous agricultural and pastoral activity. The Scaravaglie was also an important stop on the transhumance route used by shepherds and their flocks of goats and sheep, which for centuries reached the summer pastures via the Restonica valley. SANT'ELISEU Legend has it that Sant'Eliseu once protected the herds of the Cortenese shepherds. The statue of the saint, installed in a chapel on the territory of Corte, assured the shepherds of fat herds, abundant grass, plenty of milk, cheese and delicious brocciu. It was much coveted by the shepherds of Venacu. Having failed to seize it on several occasions, they let the Cortenais know that, in retaliation, they would divert the waters of the Tavignanu and Restonica. The latter, too worried about the tragedy that the disappearance of the rivers would represent, gave in to the blackmail and handed the statue over to the Vénacais shepherds. Since then, Sant'Eliseu has been installed in a chapel above San'Petru di Venacu and every year, on 29 August, the inhabitants go there on pilgrimage.
