U Magnificu Matteu

U Magnificu Matteu According to legend, u Magnificu Matteu lived in the 18th century. Several enigmatic inscriptions appear on his house: One on the lintel of the first floor window "IHS PARVUS PARVA", (To the poor people the little things). And the second on the lintel of the ground floor entrance door "NON VAL SAPERE A CHI FORTUNA A CONTRA" (Knowledge is worthless if you have fate against you). It is said that Matteu met a poor thirsty man on the outskirts of the village. He then made him pay dearly for a sip of wine from his zucca (gourd). Finding no more souls to buy since the arrival of the Franciscans in the village, the devil felt confident and proposed a deal to the vile individual. After his death, Matteu would sell his soul to the devil. But in the meantime, all his desires would be fulfilled and he would have all the riches he wanted. U pattu fu fattu, Matteu was to try to get other inhabitants to lose their souls in lust, which he did. The devil became impatient, and Matteu calmed him down: "I promise you, as I told you, when I die, my coffin will pass through a stretta Prighjunaccia and before it reaches the church you will only have to take it". When he died, the funeral procession went through the alley. Before it reached the church, the devil rushed in. In the midst of flames, lightning and sinister screams, he removed the coffin. Soon, on the side of the lake of Vitalaca, other howls of rage and blasphemy arose. Satan had just realised that the coffin was empty... Matteu had kept his bargain. He had given his coffin to the devil, but in the meantime his relatives, in great secrecy, had carried his body, laid on old boards, to the church. Simply wrapped in a white linen sheet, after receiving absolution from the parish priest, Matteu was buried like a poor man. This is why nothing can be found of Matteu u Magnificu, no tomb, not a single stone engraved other than the one above the door of his house.
