Palace Viale

Viale Palace is certainly the most important aristocratic palace in the entire village of Cervo. It was built in the 18th century by Ambrogio Viale, a prominent member of this wealthy family from Cervo, active in both the maritime and land sectors. The already monumental beauty of the exterior façade is accompanied by an interior rich in artistic beauty. The interior of the palace has two floors, the second of which is decorated with important paintings. Spread over six rooms, the second floor features a cycle of frescoes attributed to Francesco Carrega. Starting from the entrance, we find the noble family coat of arms in fine workmanship. The small entrance hall leads into the hall on whose vault is painted Juno surrounded by peacocks, her sacred animals, and the twin divinities Apollo and Diana with their mother Latona are also represented in this room. The god Mercury and winged figures impersonating the winds complete the pictorial complex. The four doors have painted busts representing: Fortitude (a warrior), Time (an old man with a covered head), Faith (a bust with a helmet), Fame-Glory (a woman with a laurel wreath) and Autumn (a woman with vine-shoots). The environment is completed by allegorical representations of Wisdom, Abundance, Prudence and Peace. The frescoes in the south corner room have a religious theme, with representations of the Virgin and St John the Evangelist. The great myth of Phaeton struck down by Jupiter brings pagan culture back to the centre of the frescoed themes, and this occurs in the central room. Astronomy is the dominant theme of the north room. Lastly, the alcove room is truly remarkable for the richness of its decoration. While the scene of Moses receiving the tables is flanked by other scenes from the Old Testament, in this room we find representations of Christian saints, above all Saint Anthony of Padua, as well as more "earthly" themes, such as the two pergola balconies from one of which a young girl looks out, and scenes of gardens with nymphaeum fountains and a statue of Neptune.
