From the Plain to the Mountains At an altitude of 800 metres, Bastelica is surrounded by mountain pastures. Its territory is dotted with chestnut trees and covers 12,769 hectares. Numerous mule tracks link the village of Bastelica to other valleys. The chapels erected during the medieval period were places of worship that expressed the evangelisation of the populations but also places of stopover for the transhumant shepherds. Bastelicaccia being the plain of Bastelica, during the summer, the shepherds headed for the mountains and occupied isolated sites of the sheepfolds such as Pozzi, Mezzaniva, Verdanese, Bussu, Pantanicciu. "The flocks left the day after Saint Anthony of Padua on 13 June and returned to the plain in September after having paid their leases on 29 September for Saint Michael's Day. The Prunelli The Prunelli valley, named after the river that runs through it, begins in the Renoso massif (2,352 metres) in the commune of Bastelica and extends to the sea. The Prunelli flows into the Gulf of Ajaccio, where it is joined by the Gravona about 200 metres from the mouth, between the Campo-del-Oro airport and the Capitello tower. The Prunelli crosses eight communes from downstream to upstream (Ajaccio, Grosseto-Prugna, Bastelicaccia, Eccica-Suarella, Cauro, Ocana, Tolla, Bastelica) and receives water from 21 tributaries from upstream to downstream, including the Ajara, the Ese, the Montichi, the Morgone, the Gravona. The legend of the Tower of Capitello Count Forcioli Conti in his book "Notre Corse" relates this tradition and evokes the enterprise of the Magnificent Matteu, Sampiero's companion. "He wanted, with the help of men's arms and ropes of goat's hair, to take the big tower of Capitello to Bastelica, from the shores of the Gulf of Ajaccio. It was a famous undertaking and worthy of final success, so much confidence, enthusiasm and vigour did the Magnificent Matteo and those who assisted him: the tower, solidly held by all the ropes that were available in the village, had only to behave well. At a moment when these brave people were pulling with all their strength, it seemed to them that it was finally moving and everyone became more animated, shouting: tira, tira la torre chi ni veni! Pull, pull the tower, for it is coming! But the tower of Capitello remained in its place...".
