A medieval territory

A village at the gateway to the Alta Rocca, Santa Lucia overlooks the Rizzanesi valley and the fertile land of this rich territory, which has been occupied since the earliest prehistoric times on the island. Numerous archaeological sites have been identified in the Rizzanesi. The present village stands on a hill occupied since the Middle Ages. Around it, the medieval territory, its layout and structure, can still be seen. The settlement was then organised in small communities, in family groups, grouped together in hamlets. Some have since been abandoned, others have become neighbouring communes. Others have been integrated into the municipality of Santa Lucia di Tallà. At the end of the 15th century, it was here that Rinucciu di a Rocca, the last lord of the Middle Ages, built one of his main residences. His wife Serena is buried in the Franciscan convent. This shows the importance of this place at the time, epicentre of the Rizzanesi valley, it was at the crossroads of important roads. Coming from the mouth, one of them linked the coast to the mountain pastures and the Alta Rocca. Another, transversal, came from the Urtolu valley, where there were important castles, including that of Baricci, an emblematic rocky peak, a stake in the conflict between Rinucciu and the Genoese. This path bears witness to the ancient links between the upper Rizzanesi valley and the Urtolu valley. The Romanesque chapels in ruins, numerous on this territory, keep the memory of these ancient paths, when they punctuated this route with their sacredness. These cult buildings were then located at a distance from the settlements, isolated, often standing on reliefs immediately bordering the main roads.
