MC18 Church of San Leonardo al Frigido - Biduino Portal - Massa

Biduino's work was placed in the church of San Leonardo al Frigido, in Massa, around 1175, on the site where the Tabula Peuntigeriana recorded a Roman mansio under the name Ad Tabernas Frigidas. The church of San Leonardo al Frigido, annexed to the Hierosolimitan hospital of San Leonardo in the Middle Ages, had a marvellous Romanesque portal made by Biduino, a sculptor and architect active in Lucca and Pisa in the last quarter of the 12th century. Made of white marble, it featured numerous sculpted scenes, including the Annunciation and the Visitation on the left side, St Leonard, the patron saint of prisoners, holding a prisoner in chains on the right, and Christ's entry into Jerusalem on the architrave. It remained there at least until 1878, when the church was partially destroyed by an earthquake. It was purchased by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, where it is currently on display as part of the exhibition ‘The Cloisters’; from 9 May 2019 in the former presidential rooms of the Palazzo Ducale in Massa, the headquarters of the Province of Massa-Carrara, you can once again admire the cast of the portal by Mastro Biduino.
