MC17 Insigne Collegiata Abbazia Mitrata di Sant'Andrea Apostolo - (Cathedral) - Carrara

The Cathedral of St. Andrew the Apostle, around which the town and the urban layout of Carrara grew up, was first mentioned in a notarial deed of 1035. Built entirely of marble, it was constructed in several stages. Of the original building, built at the end of the 11th century, some sculptures and the portal with capitals remain. This was followed by a second construction phase (mid 12th century) in Romanesque style, visible in the internal colonnade and the lower parts of the façade and side walls. The upper part of the façade, with its fine loggia with stepped arches and a majestic rose window, is Gothic (second half of the 14th century). The rectangular ground plan with semicircular apse has a three-nave layout, with the central one being much higher with a trussed roof and the side ones with cross vaults. The striking interior features rounded arches on columns with a variety of capitals and is filled with marble features and high quality work.
