MC16 Abbey of San Caprasio - Aulla

The Abbey of San Caprasio is a religious building located in Aulla, and is the town’s oldest monument. The church, belonging to the monastery, was founded in 884 by the Marquis of Tuscany Adalberto I and dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta. Since 1050 it has been dedicated to St Caprasius (the only one in Tuscany), a hermit saint from the Lerino islands (in French, îles de Lérins) on the Provençal coast, whose remains, according to legend, were brought to Aulla to save them from Saracen raids.
