MC09 The Palazzo Ducale of Massa

With its grandeur and opulence, Palazzo Ducale is certainly one of the most impressive monument in Massa. The Ducal Palace was begun in 1567 by Alberico I Cybo Malaspina but only took on its final form in the 18th century, under the guidance of Duchess Teresa Pamphilj and by architects Giovan Francesco and Alessandro Bergamini. When Napoleon added the Duchy of Massa and Carrara to his sister Elisa's possessions in 1806, she decided to use the Palazzo as a residence for herself and the court. The final layout of the Palazzo dates back to 1806 when Elisa (Bonaparte) Baciocchi demolished the parish church of San Pietro, which was previously in front of the palace, in order to create a large square in Napoleonic style.
