MC04 Castle Terrarossa - Licciana Nardi

The castle was built in the 16th century to replace the residential buildings of an old medieval fortification, situated on a hill overlooking the confluence of the Civiglia stream into the Magra river. The remains of this ancient castle, originally called Terrarossa, have now been incorporated into a private residence called Castelletto. In the 12th century, along the Via Francigena, which runs along the left bank of the Magra, on the plain below the old Castle of Terrarossa, a new settlement was established, which is referred to in written sources as Borgonuovo. This settlement, described in 1126 as being surrounded by walls and having a church dedicated to San Giovanni, dependent on the Abbey of Aulla, was spread out on both sides of the road. Over time, Borgonuovo became home to the population that had originally lived around the medieval castle, inheriting its toponym of Terrarossa. In the 16th century, Borgonuovo and Terrarossa were mentioned separately in written documentation. Today's state road does not follow the old route that ran through the entire village, but intersects it, isolating the imposing Malaspina residence from the original layout, which was built in the second half of the 16th century at the behest of the first Marquis of Terrarossa.
