MC03 Aghinolfi Castle - Montignoso

In the Middle Ages, the Aghinolfi castle was of major strategic importance and was fought over in centuries-long struggles by the communities of Lucca and Pisa, the bishops of Luni, the Malaspina family and their kinsmen the Marquises of Massa. Written sources testify to the existence of the fortress as far back as the Early Middle Ages. A parchment dated 753, which although a later revision of the original document is authentic in its content, mentions an olive grove located near the "castellum Aginulfi”. The fortification, surrounded by a large post-medieval wall, has a complex internal layout consisting of a residential area, the old village and a more strictly military area, which features a keep. The most interesting architectural element of the fortified complex is the large octagonal building, which is also known to be the oldest. In April 2001 the castle was handed back to the local community and visitors after its restoration by the Municipality of Montignoso. Inside, a glass floor shows the stratigraphy of the previous floors and the objects that were found there. For the occasion, a permanent multimedia installation has also been created inside the restored keep, illustrating the phases of the castle's evolution through computer-animated virtual reconstructions.
