MC02 Malaspina Castle - Massa

The Malaspina Castle in Massa towers over the vast plain beneath it, with a panoramic view of the entire coast. In all likelihood, it was because of these features that this hill was originally occupied and, in the Early Middle Ages, a fortified structure was built upon it. The castle, which was home to the Marquises of Massa, had a special relationship with the coast and the sea. By fighting off pirates, these marquises made themselves feudal lords of Corsica as well, assuming the titles of Marquises of Massa-Corsica.
