LU26 Church of Santa Maria Assunta - Santa Maria del Giudice

Since the 12th century, the town of Santa Maria del Giudice has been named after a noble Lucca family of Lombard origin (the Leone Giudice), who had large estates here. The new road to Pisa cuts the village in two and the two parish churches are situated on opposite sides of the road. On one side is the historic parish church of San Giovanni Battista (which the locals call the 'old parish church'), and on the other is the 'new parish church' dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta.
