LU24 Abbey of San Bartolomeo Church in Cantignano

The present building dates from the 18th century, but the original church is much older. It dates back to the 9th century, and this first medieval structure underwent a second reconstruction in the 12th century. Elements of the two first constructions can be seen both inside (the 10th-century necropolis under the presbytery and the fresco that runs along the left aisle, as far as behind the altar, which can be traced back to the 12th century) and in the external wall structure. In fact, the lower part of the apse has an early-medieval wall face with small bosses, while the upper part, consisting of a series of small arches resting on small hanging pillars, dates back to the Camaldolese building.
