LU08 The fortified village of Montecastrese (Camaiore)

Frequented by the Apuan Ligurians, the hill was inhabited in the Early Middle Ages and converted into a castle in the 10th century. Expanded in the 12th century, the castle was conquered by the Luccans and abandoned in 1200. In the cassero on the top, the remains of the walls, the two towers, a dungeon and a number of dwellings can be found. The lower part, surrounded by a second ring of walls, shows the remains of the village and the church of S. Barbara cemetery area.
