LU06 'Cento Fattorie Romane' Archaeological Site: one hundred Roman farms on the Lucca Plain

Situated on the banks of the lower course of the Auser, the ancient name for the Serchio river, whose course has been modified countless times over the centuries, the 'Cento Fattorie Romane? archaeological site on the Lucca Plain contains extensive remains of rural settlements from the Roman era, built in the 2nd century BC and occupied until late antiquity. In fact, dozens and dozens of Etruscan and Roman settlements and related structures (roads, bridges, etc.) sprang up on the opposite banks of the different branches of the river. Excavations have uncovered a great deal of remains from these periods: everyday objects (coins, oil lamps, vases, Etruscan gold jewellery, etc.) and masonry structures (grain silos, wells).
