The Palazzina dei Mulini (Palace of the Mills) or Villa dei Mulini, was chosen by Napoleon as his state residence in Portoferraio during his exile on the Island of Elba. The villa takes its name from the locale where Napoleon decided to establish his urban palace, the highest part of Portoferraio, particularly exposed to the wind and so originally the site of four mills, which were destroyed in order to create Napoleon’s Italian–style garden. The building chosen by Napoleon was formerly the seat of the Artillery and the Engineer Corps and was constituted by a single–floor central body and two symmetrical lateral pavilions. The renovation project was carried out by architect Paolo Bargigli and entailed the raising of the central part of the building in order to bring everything to the same height, as requested by Napoleon himself. In this way, a large salon was created on the raised floor, to be used for parties and receptions. The work on the theatre next to the palazzo was awarded to architect Luigi Bettarini and the interior decorations to Vincenzo Revelli, official court painter, who also worked on the gallery and the rooms on upper floor of the palazzo.
