LI34 Civic Archaeological Museum of the Linguella at Portoferraio

The orderly military architectural layout, designed and constructed by the most skillful engineers of Cosimo I De’ Medici, endows Portoferraio with an eternal panorama. The city was born around its port, which defends its most vital part, the shipyard, protecting the latter within the embrace of its massive fortifications. There are three strongholds in the fortress-city conceived by Cosimo I: the Forte Falcone, the Forte Stella, and the Linguella, this last one named for its position on a narrow strip of earth, shaped like a small tongue.
