LI33 Museum of the Castle and Medieval Ceramics

Within the mighty walls of the Castle of Piombino, facing the sea towards the Isle of Elba, there exists today an exceptional treasure trove: 600 examples of medieval ceramics dating from the thirteenth century, discovered by archaeologists in the Church of Sant’ Antimo sopra I Canali, in the area of the old city harbor. The museum itinerary leads the visitor towards the discovery not only of medieval Piombino, but also of the Castle, distinguished by a long and stratified history stretching all the way from 1100 to our own times. A special section is dedicated to Leonardo da Vinci, and to the projects that he pursued on the occasion of his two stays in Piombino. An especially fascinating space is the room where monumental marble animal heads are on display. These come from the Fountain of the Canals of the Marina, where Piombino had its origin after the abandonment of Populonia. After the restoration project, the heads were relocated to the museum.
