LI32 Archaeological Museum of the Territory Populonia

The Archaeological Museum of the Territory of Populonia, opened in 2001 in the city of Piombino, contains items found in what was the ancient territory of Populonia (Val di Cornia), from a lengthy period ranging from prehistory to late antiquity. The Museum also hosts an active Centre of experimental archaeology, with a focus on the crafting of ceramics and stoneware. The museum is housed in a historic edifice that was part of the ancient Citadel, seat of the Appiani princes and thus of the Princess Elisa Baciocchi, Napoleon’s sister. This was the Palazzo Nuovo (the “New Palace”, with the former stalls and lodgings of the court of the Appiani) which, before the foundation of the museum, had also enclosed humble dwellings, barracks of public security, and a professional institute. The restoration project was co-authored by Pier Luigi Cervellati, Giovanni Maffei Cardellini, and Alberto Montemagni.
