LI29 Museums of the Castle of Campiglia

The Castle of Campiglia is a stronghold that dominates the town of Campiglia Marittima in the Province of Livorno. It forms part of the System of Parks of the Val di Cornia. The area of the castle is situated on a semi-circular area, at 281 meters above sea level, and includes the donjon building (the keep), the ancient cistern, a portion of the imposing crenellated wall with a biforium window from the lords’ building, and the aqueduct built in the 1930s. The buildings occupy the centre of a park delineated by the enclosure walls of the castle, marked by bastions. With the aim of reconstructing the ancient life of the community, in the keep are preserved the archaeological finds discovered during the excavations of the castle, which belonged to the Della Gherardesca family.
