LI28 The Archaeological Mines Park of San Silvestro

The Archaeological Mines Park of San Silvestro, established after the excavation campaigns at the San Silvestro Castle, is a nature preserve of local interest of the Tuscany Region, founded in 1995; it is one of the Parks of the Val di Cornia. It occupies an area of 270 hectares in the province of Livorno. In the Archaeological Mines Park of San Silvestro—450 hectares past Campiglia Marittima and the Piombino promontory--there are museums, mining galleries, and a medieval miners’ and blacksmiths’ village founded a thousand years ago… But also trails and pathways of historical, archaeological, and naturalistic interest which take one into the heart of the Val di Cornia. The visit begins at the Archaeology and Minerals Museum, in the ticket office building, and continues through the galleries of the Temperino Mine, enabling visitors to discover the underground world and the evolution of the techniques of research and extraction of the minerals of copper, lead, silver, and zinc in the Val di Cornia.
