LI23 Synagogue of Livorno

The synagogue of Livorno stands not far from Piazza Grande, within the pentagonal city of Buontalenti, in the spacious Piazza Benamozegh. It was built on the design of the architect Angelo Di Castro, and completed in 1962 on the site of the former synagogue, which was partially destroyed during the second World War. Together with Rome, Trieste, and Genoa, it is one of Italy’s four great monumental synagogues of the twentieth century, and the only one built after World War II.
