LI19 The Venice Quarter

“Venice” is a quarter of Livorno, the only one in the city centre that, after the devastations of World War II and the post-war reconstruction, has preserved most of its urban and architectural vestiges. Although it does not coincide with the original nucleus of Medicean Livorno, it still represents the true historic centre of the city. Every summer, usually in the week spanning July and August, the quarter becomes the centre of a folkloric festival (“Effetto Venezia,” or “The Venice Effect”), during which the streets are enlivened by booths, shows, and cultural events. In addition, the Venice quarter is the home of a wine-store that participates in Livorno’s rowing competitions.
