LI18 Monument of the Four Moors

The monument of the Four Moors looms over the Piazza Micheli of Livorno, in front of the small dockyard that the Grand-Duke Ferdinando I de’ Medici commissioned to be built at the end of the sixteenth century, to expand the port. The sculpture group, placed next to the imposing circuit of walls, would have manifested the Granducal authority to the eyes of numerous travelers. The monument celebrates the victories of Grand-Duke Ferdinando I de’ Medici and of the Order of the Knights of Saint Stephen over the Barbary pirates, who ravaged and plundered the Tuscan coasts. The work is composed of the Four Moors in bronze, chained to the base of a tall pedestal, above which rises the statue of Ferdinando I himself.
