LI17B Fortezza Vecchia – The Old Fortress

The Old Fortress is a fortification that rises alongside the Medici Port of Livorno. The result of re-workings and reconstructions over the course of the centuries, it encloses the entire history of the city, from its origins to the present. The Old Fortress is asymmetrical in form, and is comprised of three bastions (the “Ampolletta”, facing the city, the “Canaviglia” towards the port, and the “Capitana” towards the northeast). The bastions which, like the protective walls, are lined with bricks have the distinctive “heart-shaped” form. At the corners of the Canaviglia and Ampolletta bastions were affixed two gigantic bronze lion’s head masks, today replaced by marble copies.
